Sherwin-Williams, Color Blending

Blending Ultra 7000® Basecoat Colors

Surface Preparation

1. Prepare the damaged area in the usual manner using recommended undercoats and sanding procedures. Final sanding should be done with 400* grit dry or 600* grit wet.

2. Adjacent panels or blend areas should be cleaned with soap and water, followed by the appropriate Sherwin-Williams surface cleaner.

3. Using a gray nylon scuff pad and USP-90 Liquid Scuffing Gel scuff sand the entire panel or blend area. When blending both the color and clear coat scuff beyond the area where the clearcoat blend will end. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

4. Re-clean the entire area with the appropriate Sherwin-Williams surface cleaner.

( * Use P400 dry or P800 wet when using "P" graded sandpapers.)

Blend Application

1. Mask the adjacent panel(s) or blend area(s) with masking paper. Only expose the repair area.

2. Apply the first coat of basecoat to the repaired area. Extend each additional coat beyond the last to blend or merge the new paint into the old. Use medium coats and allow each coat to become hand slick. Apply only enough basecoat color to achieve hiding.

3. After coverage is achieved, reduce air pressure on conventional spray equipment to 25 psi and apply a low pressure mist coat, arcing the spray gun at the end of each stroke to further blend the color. To aid in the application of the low pressure mist coat the ready to spray basecoat color may be over-reduced with US-3 from 25-100%. Allow the basecoat to dry the appropriate time before applying the clearcoat to the entire panel. For recommendations on blending Ultra 7000® Clearcoats, refer to information later in this section.
